Saturn on Saturn’s Day

By Aviva Victoria Brueckner

I started the day looking for my sketch pad. I knew I used it on Thursday. And I was sure I put it back on its place afterwards. But it wasn’t where. And it wasn’t to find anywhere else.

Mars (the one with fur, read my tomcat) followed me around excitedly, chased my legs, hid behind pictures… He wasn’t very helpful. Only after I found my sketchpad in a gap in front of the heating installation I knew the little mischiefmaker enjoyed his triumph. He had hidden it where while playing around Thursday night.

He is such a jealous cat once in a while. He loves to sleep right on top of my canvas or skretches the back side while I work on the front. He desperately needs another cat to play with.

Well, once I had my sketchpad back in my hands (and gave Mars a thorough brush) I started to sketch out my idea for Saturn. It needed to be even more abstract than Jupiter as the people Dante meets on the spheres get more abstract in their shapes (e.g. only lights) the further up he comes.

The monks on Saturn made me think of the centaurs. And the one centaur fighting for Hogwarts from the beginning in the Harry Potter Series is Firenze. As it happens Florence or Firenze is the city of birth of Dante. It is his origin as Saturn is the origin of the gods and goddesses in the Pantheon.

Additional to this, the main picture on the Saturn Sphere if the ladder reaching from earth to heaven. Jacob’s ladder had to be in the picture as well. And so, I came up with this:
