First Draft

By Aviva Victoria Brueckner

Everyone interested in it will know by now that JKR wrote a 800 word prequel that will be autioned of for charity. On HPN my dear friend Olwen set up a writing contest and will add a fan art contest soon. Rules are: Write a 800 word prequel with Sirius, James and a policeman acting. It should be set at the end of year 6/ summer break/ beginning of year 7. Here is a first draft of my entry that I will also make into a pic for the fan art contest:

A green jet of light. The black haired boy ducked just in time. Why again had he, Regulus Black, ever thought being Slytherin’s Seeker would be fun?

“Cut it out, Afonso.” The words splattered self-importantly the corridor and dripped oily onto the audience. “Hurt him and they might find a capable substitute for this – girl.”

How predictable! Offer a feeble moment of lime light and my brother jumps in. Well, I shall offer him another chance.

“Girl? Let’s see who will be the girl in the game, Brother!”

“Is this a question really, Brother?”

“Fancy a little pre-game bet?”

“And what would that be?”

“Inspired by the sparsely dressed Muggle girls from the posters in your room – don’t laugh, as sad as it is for a wizard, it’s perfectly true – I’d say, get me a bikini from the Night Club in the next Muggle town and I’ll wear the little gem for the game tomorrow. You fail, I provide you with one.”

“And where is the challenge for me in this?”

“From the moment you leave the castle until you return you are not allowed to use magic – we are speaking of a Muggle bikini after all.”

“Pure Toujour in Bikini – I wouldn’t miss this chance. Count me in.”

“Snuffles?”

“Oh, no! Why did we leave Wormtail the mirror again? He will ruin everything.”

“Prongs?”

“McGonagall, our probation after your glorious idea to send Snivellus to Moony – even your brother in bikini isn’t worth being expelled. – Yes, Wormtail? What’s up?”

“Oh good, it’s you, Prongs? Are you at the village already? Can you see the girls? I would have loved to see them too.”

“I told you already, we won’t see any girls this late at night. So, you don’t miss a thing. – And now, if it’s not McGonagall coming, refrain from calling us again.”

“But –“

Sirius pulled the mirror to his face. “Wormtail!” he yelled silently, “here are no girls. Stop peeing into your pants.” The mirror vanished in his cloak.

Both turned their attention back to the street that curved down into a small town. It lay sleepy. At its outskirts stood an isolated house, windows gleamed like pale rubies.

“That’s it?”

“Yes.”

“But there are still cars in the parking lot?”

“It’s closed by now, trust me. – It’s time to get the bikini for my brother, don’t you think?”

They left the motorbike, Sirius had stationed for occasional excursions in Hogsmead since last summer, hidden behind a rocky formation. Afoot they advanced the house.

A while later two dark shadows emerged in the red light emanated from the house. Sniggering they held up a bikini.

“Lucky, the Muggles left the window open. Your brother will look marvellous in these.”

Sirius took the bikini top from James and held it to his chest. “You think it is his size?”

Their laughter stopped dead as the sound of an engine drowned them out. With two strides they backed into the shadows.

“What’s this all about?” James whispered when the car stopped right in front of the house.

“Police,” was all Sirius could reply before a policeman disembarked. His flashlight danced through the darkness as he checked abandoned cars in the parking lot.

“Prongs? Snuffles? How is it going?”

Sirius acted first. He pulled his wand. The flashlight detected only a black dog. Fawning and joyfully barking he set out in a trot down the street. In his cover, James reached the bike first.

Triumphantly, James and Sirius approached the Slytherin table and sat down left and right of Regulus. Conversations around them hushed and heads turned into their direction.

“Good Morning, brother. I thought I bring you today’s game outfit. Your bet, my fun.”

“Not so fast, Sirius.” Carefully, he folded the newspaper he had read before he looked his brother into his eyes, slightly smiling. “I would be surprised if you stuck to the rules, would be the first time. So, I asked Snape here to provide me with some of his Verita Serum. I am especially interested in how you managed to get past the Muggle Police I alerted once I saw your – rat – watching McGonagall’s chambers.”

“YOU CALLED THE POLICE?” Sirius asked outraged.

“No, I don’t think the offered drink is necessary,” replied James however.

“When we loose,” Sirius turned now at James.

“Yes, but didn’t you hear what he just said about Wormtail?”

The message dawned only slowly yet all the more horrible on Sirius. His brother had him nicely trapped.

It was a clear and crisp late autumn day. The whole school had gathered for the first match of the season. The stands vibrated in silver and green, gold and red when the teams entered. Mafficking they greeted a freezing Sirius Black – in a tiny bikini.
